Step up your care: The ultimate guide to keeping your staircase stunning & strong.

Your staircase isn’t just a way to get from one floor to another—it’s a core part of your home or building’s design, safety, and daily function.

Whether it’s an MDF staircase in a townhouse, a striking steel spine feature in a luxury build, or a robust commercial installation, a little care goes a long way in keeping it looking and performing at its best.

With the right maintenance, your staircase can stay safe, sturdy, and stylish for decades. Here’s Apexa’s guide to looking after your staircase the smart way.

1. Keep it clean.

Dust, grit, and dirt can build up faster than you think—especially on treads and in corners. Regular cleaning not only keeps things looking sharp but also prevents surface wear.

  • Timber treads: Vacuum or sweep regularly, and use a damp (not wet) microfibre cloth for a deeper clean.
  • Glass balustrades: Use a non-abrasive glass cleaner and a soft cloth to keep panels crystal-clear.
  • Powder-coated aluminium: A gentle wash with mild soapy water will remove dirt without damaging the finish.

2. Check for wear and tear.

Over time, high-traffic areas may loosen fixings or show signs of stress. A quick inspection every few months can save you from bigger problems later. Look for:

  • Loose handrails or balustrade panels
  • Worn tread surfaces
  • Squeaks or movement in the structure
  • Chips or scratches in the finish

If you find anything concerning, address it quickly—especially if it’s related to the safety of the staircase.

3. Protect high-wear areas.

In busy households or commercial spaces, certain areas take more impact than others. Consider using:

  • Protective runners or mats on timber treads in heavy-use zones
  • Door mats at entry points to reduce grit being carried onto stairs
  • Felt pads on furniture near stair landings to prevent accidental scuffs

4. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives.

Strong cleaners, steel wool, or abrasive pads can damage surfaces and finishes. Stick to mild, non-abrasive cleaning products and soft cloths or mops.

5. Maintain a safe environment.

Your staircase should be as safe as it is stylish. Keep treads clear of clutter, and make sure lighting is bright and even—particularly for external stairs or darker areas of the home. Excess sunlight will cause your natural timber to move, fade in colour and potentially crack over time.

Why it matters.

Looking after your staircase isn’t just about appearance—it’s about protecting your investment and ensuring it performs as intended for years to come. At Apexa Systems, every staircase is built with strength, safety, and style in mind—but even the best design benefits from regular care.
