Balustrade care made easy: Tips for long-lasting performance.

External balustrades aren’t just a safety feature—they’re part of your building’s first impression. Whether framing a balcony, enclosing an outdoor staircase, or adding definition to an entryway, they face far more wear and tear than their indoor counterparts.

Sun, rain, dust, and even salt air can all impact their appearance and longevity if they’re not cared for properly.

At Apexa, we build every balustrade to meet Australia’s toughest conditions. But like anything exposed to the elements, a little maintenance goes a long way toward keeping them looking sharp and performing safely.

1. Wash regularly.

Outdoor balustrades collect dust, dirt, and grime faster than you might think. A gentle wash every 2–3 months will help maintain their finish and prevent surface build-up.

  • Powder-coated aluminium: Use mild soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth or sponge—avoid abrasive cleaners or scourers.
  • Glass panels: A simple natural glass cleaner or diluted vinegar solution works well, followed by a dry microfibre cloth for a streak-free finish.

If you’re in a coastal area, washing more frequently is essential to remove salt deposits that can damage finishes over time.

2. Protect the finish.

Powder-coated surfaces are tough but not indestructible. To prolong their life:

  • Avoid dragging heavy items across them.
  • Keep abrasive tools and cleaning pads away.
  • For high-traffic or high-impact areas, consider a clear protective coating to give extra durability.

3. Keep drainage clear.

Blocked drainage points around balconies or stair landings can cause water pooling, which accelerates corrosion and staining. Regularly sweep and clear these areas, especially after storms.

4. Consider seasonal maintenance.

Environmental conditions vary throughout the year, and your balustrade care should too:

  • Summer: Increased UV exposure can fade or weaken finishes—consider more frequent cleaning and a UV-protective polish for glass.
  • Autumn: Remove leaves and organic debris promptly to prevent staining and mould growth.
  • Winter: Keep an eye out for moisture build-up in shaded areas.
  • Spring: Pollen build-up can leave a haze on glass—clean regularly to keep panels crystal clear.

5. Why maintenance matters.

Keeping your external balustrades clean and well-maintained is about more than appearance—it’s about safety, performance, and protecting your investment. With the right care, your apexa balustrade will continue to perform and impress for many years to come.
